Design and Spec Notes for Perimeter Grade Beams Using Concrete Faced Insulating Wall Panels from Tech-Crete
A detail that’s readily overlooked but tremendously important to the overall appearance of commercial buildings is what owners and customers see when they walk into a retail establishment. Here are some pictures of Tech-Crete CFI Concrete Faced Insulation being used on perimeter grade beams.
This first picture illustrates a typical shopping centre mall which has a traditional EIFS wall with Tech-Crete CFI Concrete Faced Insulation perimeter grade beam (the grey portion on the wall between the red SUV and waste receptacle).
This next picture illustrates some key design principles which are often overlooked on the drawings for perimeter grade beam specs.
- The outside corners of the bow wall are protected with a 3 x 3 piece of galvanized metal.
- The expansion joints in the sidewalk line up with the Bay in the wall. Also you will notice that the spacing between expansion joints and the sidewalk is approximately 5 feet. What the contractor did was install the two corner pieces and then cut the middle piece to properly fill the centre so it is all even.
- The superintendent also instructed the sidewalk installation crew to protect the CFI from concrete over-splashing.
In this 3rd picture again, notice that the expansion joints of the sidewalk line up with the joints in the CFI making for a nice uniform appearance.
